Amazon runs one of the most structured hiring processes in tech. Every interview — including the coding rounds — incorporates Leadership Principle (LP) behavioral questions. The result is an interview that simultaneously tests technical depth and cultural alignment from the opening recruiter call through the final Bar Raiser round.

The Amazon Interview Loop
Amazon's process for SDEs typically covers five to six rounds in a single onsite loop after a recruiter screen and technical phone screen. The total timeline is two to four weeks — faster than Google.
Each onsite round is 60 minutes and covers a combination of:
- Coding (2-3 rounds): Data structures and algorithms; medium to hard LeetCode difficulty
- System design (1 round, L5+): Distributed systems at Amazon scale
- Behavioral/LP rounds (2 rounds): Deep dives into specific Leadership Principles
- Bar Raiser round: A trained interviewer from outside the hiring team with veto authority
The Bar Raiser is the defining feature of Amazon's process. Their explicit mandate is to ensure every hire raises the average — and they can reject a candidate even if every other interviewer votes yes.
Leadership Principles: What Amazon Is Actually Testing
Amazon has codified its culture into 16 Leadership Principles. Every interview covers two to three LPs directly. Before your loop, you need at least one strong STAR story for each LP, with two to three stories prepared for the most frequently tested ones.

Behavioral Questions: Strong vs. Weak Answers
Q: Tell me about a time you took on a task outside your job responsibilities. (Ownership)
Weak answer: "I always help my teammates whenever they need it. I'm a team player."
Strong answer: "Our deployment pipeline had no owner and was causing 90-minute delays for every team. I spent two weekends doing root cause analysis — the bottleneck was a sequential test suite that was trivially parallelizable. I implemented the change, which cut deployment time from 90 to 18 minutes. Every team benefited and it was entirely outside my assigned scope. I documented the change and handed off ownership to the platform team."
Q: Describe a time you had to make a decision with limited data. (Bias for Action)
Weak answer: "I had to decide quickly and I made the best choice I could with what I had."
Strong answer: "An enterprise customer was losing data due to a misconfigured retry limit. The on-call engineer was unreachable and escalation was taking too long. With about 60% confidence in my diagnosis, I deployed a targeted config fix to staging, verified it in 15 minutes, and pushed to production with a documented rollback plan. I notified my manager simultaneously. Data loss stopped within 35 minutes. The post-mortem I wrote afterward updated our incident response policy to explicitly allow direct action in data-loss scenarios."
Q: Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision but had to commit to it. (Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit)
Weak answer: "Sometimes you just have to accept decisions even when you disagree. I've done that."
Strong answer: "Leadership voted to sunset a feature I believed had significant long-term value. I prepared a data-based case for a 3-month extension and presented it clearly at the planning meeting. The decision was upheld. I then fully committed — I led the sunset myself, built the migration path for affected users, and ensured zero data loss. Three months later the leadership team cited my willingness to push back constructively and then execute completely as the behavior they wanted to see across the org."
Technical Focus Areas
Coding Rounds
Amazon expects clean, readable code — not just a working solution. Medium problems should be solved within 25 minutes for SDE II candidates, leaving time for edge cases and a follow-up discussion.
A key pattern: Amazon interviewers will follow up with "What if the input was 100x larger? What breaks?" Prepare to discuss time/space complexity trade-offs beyond Big-O notation.
System Design (SDE III and Above)
Senior-level system design at Amazon focuses on real AWS-scale systems: distributed queues (SQS), key-value stores (DynamoDB), distributed caches (ElastiCache), and message brokers. Understanding how these services work under the hood matters more than memorizing architectures.
Common questions include designing Amazon's checkout system, building SQS from scratch, or designing a real-time inventory management system for a Black Friday traffic spike. STAR Format is Required
Every behavioral answer must follow the Situation-Task-Action-Result structure. Vague answers fail at Amazon — results must be quantified. "We improved performance" is not a result. "We reduced p95 latency from 420ms to 140ms, which increased checkout completion by 8%" is a result.
Preparation Roadmap
4 weeks before your loop:
- Week 1: Read all 16 LPs. Write down raw experiences for each. Do not worry about format yet.
- Week 2: Convert your top 10 stories to STAR format. Add specific metrics to every result.
- Week 3: Practice out loud. Record yourself. Listen for filler phrases, vague results, and excessive "we" attribution.
- Week 4: Run two to three full mock loops with timed conditions.
The candidates who land Amazon offers have their LP stories so well-practiced that they can pivot between them naturally when an interviewer probes with "Tell me more about that specific decision."
