It manufactures a significant share of the world's most advanced semiconductors, hosts global hardware brands, and has been quietly building a software startup ecosystem that does not get nearly enough attention outside Asia. The Employer Landscape
Taiwan's tech scene splits into two distinct worlds: hardware and software.
On the hardware side, TSMC dominates. The world's largest contract chipmaker employs tens of thousands of engineers in fabs and R&D centers concentrated in Hsinchu Science Park, about an hour from Taipei. If you work in chip design, process engineering, or semiconductor packaging, TSMC is the apex employer. At Taiwanese companies, software engineers at junior to mid level typically earn between NTD 800,000 and NTD 1,500,000 annually (roughly USD 25,000–47,000). Senior engineers at companies like Asus or Appier can earn NTD 1,800,000–2,800,000 (USD 56,000–87,000). TSMC is a notable outlier — experienced process and design engineers can earn NTD 3,000,000+ with bonuses.
At global company offices (Google, Amazon, Line), compensation is significantly higher and often benchmarked to regional packages, with total compensation for senior engineers ranging from USD 100,000–180,000 when stock is included.
Cost of living provides meaningful context: a comfortable one-bedroom apartment in central Taipei runs NTD 25,000–40,000 per month. Transit is inexpensive. Healthcare costs are low under Taiwan's national health insurance system.
Work Visa and the Employment Gold Card
For foreign nationals, Taiwan offers a streamlined path for high-skilled workers: the Employment Gold Card. It combines a work permit, residency permit, re-entry permit, and alien resident certificate in a single document, valid for one to three years and renewable.
Eligibility is based on meeting criteria in one of several categories: technology, economics, science, education, culture, or sport. For software engineers, the criteria typically require demonstrating a salary threshold (monthly salary over NTD 160,000 from a foreign employer, or equivalent qualifications), a patent record, or published work in the field. Processing takes approximately two to eight weeks and can be done from abroad. The Gold Card program has become a legitimate pathway for international engineers drawn by Taiwan's stability and quality of life.
Standard work visas also apply if you have an employer sponsoring your visa directly.
Work Culture
Taiwanese tech work culture varies significantly by company type. At traditional hardware companies, hierarchy is real — managers are addressed formally, decisions flow from seniority, and long hours are normalized. Engineers working on TSMC production teams commonly work shifts and accept that the fab schedule does not negotiate.
At software startups and foreign offices, culture is closer to a Western tech norm: flatter hierarchies, more English spoken in meetings, greater individual autonomy. The gap is noticeable and worth investigating before accepting an offer.
Mandarin is the working language at most Taiwanese companies. English proficiency varies widely. At global company offices and some startups (Appier, for instance, operates significantly in English given its international team), English suffices. If you plan to work at a domestic company long-term, basic Mandarin is a meaningful investment.

Beyond career considerations, Taipei is genuinely livable. The public transit system is one of the best in Asia. Night market food culture is inexpensive and excellent. The city is safe, compact, and navigable. Internet infrastructure is exceptional. Taiwan's political stability and institutional reliability give it a different risk profile than several other Asia-Pacific tech hubs.

For software engineers, the calculus depends more on whether you are targeting domestic companies, global offices, or building something of your own — but the foundations are increasingly there.
